Douglas A-4 Skyhawk
The A-4 Skyhawk was an attack aircraft originally developed for the US Navy during the 1950s by the Douglas Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas). Over 3,000 Skyhawks have been produced, and the aircraft has been widely exported around the world.
Argentina was the first foreign user of the Skyhawk with the country's first purchase occuring in 1965. In 1977, the United States imposed an arms embargo on Argentina, because of human rights violations during the Dirty War, and this led to a shortage of spare parts. Nevertheless, Skyhawks were able to play an important role in the Argentine war effort.
Armed only with iron bombs and lacking any form of electronic missile self-defence, Argentine Skyhawks sank three British Ships (HMS Antelope, HMS Coventry and RFA Sir Galahad), destroyed a fourth (HMS Ardent), and inflicted severe damage on several others (HMS Argonaut, HMS Broadsword, HMS Glasgow, and RFA Sir Tristram). In return, 22 Argentine Skyhawks were lost to all causes during the war.
Here is a summary of the A-4 Skyhawk's technical specifications:
