Operation Black BuckOperation Black Buck was a series of British air-raids carried out by Royal Air Force (RAF) Vulcan bombers, backed by Victor tankers and Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft. Each of the raids commenced from Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island, and involved a round-trip over thousands of miles of ocean, in what was at that time, the longest-range air-attacks in history. Because of the extreme range, not only did the Vulcan have to be refuelled by Victor tankers, but the Victor tankers had to be refuelled too, in a complicated "pyramid" arrangement. ![]() In total, five Black Buck missions were completed during the war, out of seven that were planned. No British losses were sustained during any of the missions, which succeeded in cratering Port Stanley airfield (making it unusable by Argentine fast jets), attacking Argentine radars, and destroying Argentine stores and facilities in Port Stanley. For more information about the Black Buck missions, please visit Operation Black Buck. There is also an excellent account of the first Black Buck, and the background to the missions, in the book, Vulcan 607. |
