Sandy Woodward

John Forster "Sandy" Woodward (born May 1st, 1932) was the British Admiral who commanded the South Atlantic naval task force during the Falklands War. Woodward had joined the Royal Navy at age 13 in 1946, and received his first command (of the nuclear submarine Warspite) in 1969.

After the war, Woodward was knighted. In 1983, he was appointed Flag Officer Submarines and NATO Commander Submarines Eastern Atlantic. In 1984, he was promoted to Vice Admiral, and in 1985, he became Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff. Woodward's final position was as Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command and Flag Aide-de-Camp to the Queen. He retired in 1989.

Sandy Woodward's memoirs are available in a book: One Hundred Days: The Memoirs of the Falklands Battle Group Commander.
