HMS CoventryHMS Coventry was a Type 42 destroyer of the Royal Navy that was launched in 1974, and commissioned in 1978. The ship's first engagements in the Falklands War were successful. On May 3rd, the ship's Lynx helicopter fired two Sea Skua missiles (the first ever Sea Skuas fired in anger) as part of the attack on the Alférez Sobral. On May 9th, the ship itself fired a Sea Dart anti-aircraft missile which destroyed an Argentine Puma helicopter. On May 25th, the HMS Coventry's luck changed. Early in the day, HMS Coventry, which was accompanied by HMS Broadsword, was attacked by Argentine Skyhawks, and managed to down two. However, a second attack by four Skyhawks got through the ships' defences, and hit the Coventry with three bombs, two of which exploded. The ship immediately began to list to port, had to be abandoned within 20 minutes, and soon capsized. The remains of HMS Coventry sank the next day. Nineteen of her crew were killed in the attack. ![]() |
