Westland WaspThe Westland Wasp is a first generation British-built helicopter that served into the anti-submarine role aboard Royal Navy ships. Although an effective submarine killer, the Wasp performed best when working together with a Wessex submarine hunter. As a result, the Wessex was taken our of service in the late 1970s and replaced with the more capable Lynx. When the Falklands War broke out in 1982, seven reserve frigates and their helicopters were recommissioned for active service. As a result, Wasps served in the South Atlantic. The Wasps' most important contribution to the British war effort, was in the fighting around South Georgia. A Wasp from HMS Plymouth as well as two Wasps from HMS Endurance, together with a Lynx from HMS Brilliant, and a Wessex from HMS Antrim, attacked the Argentine submarine Santa Fe, damaging it so that it could not submerge and forcing the crew to abandon the submarine. ![]() Here is a summary of the Wasp's technical specifications:
