Boeing CH-47 Chinook

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a twin-engine tandem-rotor helicopter that has been exported around the world, including to both Britain and Argentina.

Boeing CH-47 Chinook

Four British Chinooks were taken to the Falkland Islands on the Atlantic Conveyer, but all but one were lost when the ship was attacked and sank on May 25th, 1982 by an Argentine Navy Super Etendard using an Exocet missile. The surviving Chinook, known by the its squadron code "Bravo November" was on an engineering test flight at the time of the attack, and made it safely to the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes.

Even though all spares and manuals were lost when the Atlantic Conveyer was sank, Bravo November was able to continue flying and make a significant contribution to the British war effort, transporting 1,530 troops, 600 tons of equipment and 650 Argentine POWs during the conflict.

After the conflict, Bravo November went on to serve in every subsequent major RAF operation for the next 25 years, including service in Lebanon, Germany, Northern Ireland, Operation Granby and Iraq.
