Dassault-Breguet Super EtendardThe Super Etendard is French-made carrier-borne strike fighter in service with the French and Argentine Navies, and which also served with the Iraqi Air Force for a period during the 1980s. ![]() The Argentine Navy elected to buy 14 Super Etendards in 1980, but by the time that the Falklands War broke out, only five aircraft, along with five air-launched Exocet missiles, had been delivered. Furthermore, although Argentine pilots had utilized French flight trainers in France, by the time of the war, they had logged just 45 flight hours in the aircraft. Nevertheless, the Argentine Navy's Super Etendards performed well during the conflict. All five air-launched Exocets were used. The British destroyer HMS Sheffield and the supply ship MV Atlantic Conveyor were both destroyed by Exocets (two missiles were used in each of these attacks). The fifth Argentine air-launched Exocet was fired at the HMS Invincible task group but was apparently destroyed by gunfire from HMS Avenger. ![]() Here is a summary of the Super Etendard's technical specifications:
