Pebble IslandOn the night of May 14th to May 15th 1982, elements of the British Special Air Service (SAS) launched a raid on the Argentine occupied airstrip on Pebble Island. The raid was carried out by 45 SAS troopers accompanied by Captain Chris Brown of the Royal Artillery who has as the Naval Gunfire Support Forward Observer (NGSFO). Naval gunfire support was provided by HMS Glamorgan's Mark 6 4.5 inch gun. The SAS troops were delivered using two Sea King helicopters to a point about 3.7 miles (6 kilometres) from the airstrip. Once they entered the airstrip and laid charges on seven aircraft, and then opened fire on the aircraft. At this point HMS Glamorgan then began shelling Argentine positions hitting the ammunition dump and fuel stores. Eleven aircraft were destroyed during the raid; six Pucarás, four T-34 Mentors and one Skyvan. Furthermore, the airstrip itself was damaged beyond repair. British casualties were just one soldier wounded. British sources say that one Argentine was killed during the raid, however Argentina disputes this. |
