SidewinderThe AIM-9 Sidewinder is a heat-seeking air-to-air missile that was originally developed during the 1950s, but remains in service (in updated forms) to this day. During the Falklands War, British Sea Harriers were equipped with the new AIM-9L ("Lima") model. The AIM-9L was the first "all-aspect" Sidewinder, with the ability to attack enemy aircraft from all aspects including head-on. This significantly improved the weapon's lethality, with a kill ratio of around 80% as opposed to the 10% to 15% of previous versions, giving the British a dramatic advantage in air-to-air combat. Partly as a result of this advantage, not a single British Sea Harrier was lost in air-to-air combat, whereas they did manage to shoot down over 20 Argentine aircraft.
